Miss Independent
Ne-Yo
I didn’t actually compile a mix for Valentine’s Day 2009, but the very first Flood Tank event occurred in February on Friday the 13th (the day before the holiday). It was called Lucky in Love. Isn’t that clever?
WYN
Francis and the Lights
This one’s about seeing a pretty girl on the subway and coming up with lots of things to say but not actually having the nerve to talk to her. Hits close to home.
Me & U (Siik Remix)
Cassie vs. Ratatat
This playlist is a section from the mix I performed for that party—the cool-down bit at the very end, when everyone was exhausted and not even dancing anymore. That is, maybe the best part.
Something About Us
Daft Punk
Obviously I’m writing these descriptions after the fact. Having been arranged for a dance party, this mix is more about aesthetic and flow than personal meaning, but I think I’m okay with that.
Hands In The Dark
Chromatics
I don’t have a whole lot to say about these songs. Just listen.
Heartbeat
Pharrell feat. Nicole Scherzinger
Skateboard P appears twice in this playlist. During this section of the party there was at least one other song on which he was credited, if not two or three more. He’s good.
Girlfriend (Neptunes Remix)
*NSYNC feat. Nelly
I’m not ashamed to be a fan, unironically, of a lot of old boy bands to this day. Listen to this, Pharrell’s other credit in this mix, and tell me it’s not an excellently-produced pop song.
Anything
JoJo
I discovered Anything just days before the show and placed it at the very end of the mix as a joke. It stuck around and turned out to be a pretty excellent choice for the final track. It samples Toto’s Africa very conspicuously but turns it into something completely new, and I couldn’t imagine it any other way.
